+ Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

Website Design: No two sites are the same so I don't have a standard pricing structure. For guidance, recent sites have been priced from £550 to over £1,000.

Final cost is open to negotiation and depends on the size of the site, complexity of the design, the functions it requires and if there is a very tight deadline for completion.

Domain names: cost from £15 per annum depending on the extension (.com, .co.uk etc). I can use your existing domain or I can register one for you. Several domains may be used for the same site - e.g yourdomain.com & yourdomain.co.uk

Hosting: I can provide hosting from £100 per annum, which includes basic updates to your site and support for any problems you may have. If you prefer to use an existing or alternative host provider, this is possible providing they provide the same technical specifications (MySQL database, PhP etc).

Payment: Upon negotiation I will ask for a 20% non-refundable deposit by invoice, the remainder to be paid upon successful completion of the project. Any costs such as domain name registration or purchasing stock photography, illustrations, fonts etc will also be passed on to the client.

Can you update my old site designed by someone else?

I have found that taking over existing projects is as time consuming as starting from scratch so I would recommend making a new site based on the existing design. This will speed up the initial process and keep costs down. New technologies and browser applications require responsive website designs, so your site looks equally good on your desk top computer, smart phone, tablet device, etc.

How long does it take?

Our initial discussions will concern the idea and structure for your new site. If you can point me to websites you like (or dislike!) this will help me understand your preferred design, layout, colours, fonts, etc. It sometimes helps to compare competitor's sites!

Then you'll need to send me materials such as photos, artwork, biographical and other texts, details of CDs, audio and video extracts, a diary of forthcoming events and so on.

Some clients like to give a detailed brief for the design and/or what resources and text go where. Others prefer to send all their raw materials and leave me to work out the most effective way of presenting their work on the website.

At this point I can give you an indication of the time it will take for me to present my initial design ideas. On agreement of the design direction, I should have a good idea of how long it will take to complete the project and when you can expect to publish the site.

As all these processes require time and effort from both client and designer, it is impossible to give an exact project duration. However, if you have a specific date in mind, for example a forthcoming major event, that can be part of the consideration from the outset.

Can I use wordpress?

Most of HBarnes' recent sites have been designed to run on wordpress. I make customised design templates and use a tried-and-tested selection of plugins to extend the website's functionality. Wordpress is easy for clients to update.
